Toledo is located just an hour form Madrid. This city used to be the capital of the Spanish empire. This city has a strong historic heritage. UNESCO declared this city world heritage in 1986.
The city is a mix of cultures. In Toledo, Catholics, Muslims and Jewish used to coexists. The city has been the scenery of many historical events and this is reflected in every street. Due to his strategic location, it was very hard to attack. This has made the city conserve most of its monuments nowadays. The richness of the city can be observed by its monuments. One of the main buildings is the Alcazar. This huge building used to be a roman palace in the III century. In the times of the empire, it was the residence of the emperor. Nowadays, the museum of the army and a library have the honour to be in it.
The city is known by its impressive wall. It surrounds all the southern part of the city. The north is protected by the Tajo River. One of the most important doors of the city is the Bisagra door. Its origin is Muslim and many of its shields remind us so. Many other buildings remind the visitor of the heritage left by the Muslims.
The Jewish heritage is present in the Barrio de la Juderia. This used to be a very rich cultural place. Many of the documents of the Empire and lots of translations were done in this part of the city. Also, lots of ceramic objects, as well as other hand made products were done in this part of the city.
The visitor can enjoy a city full of contrasts. Also, Toledo is well known because of its gastronomy. There are many places were typical food is served ready to satisfy the most demanding palates.
